How to prepare for a VO2 max test
Good preparation makes a VO2 test easier to complete and compare with a later measurement. At HBOT Global, avoid food for four hours beforehand, caffeine and hard training the previous day. Testing takes place on a bicycle; disclose illness, injuries or other circumstances that could affect participation in advance.
What should I do the day before?
Avoid hard training the previous day so the test is not mainly measuring fatigue from a demanding session. An unusually strenuous day or poor sleep can influence your experience and performance. Try to arrive under conditions similar to an ordinary, rested day, rather than changing your entire routine to chase a particular score.
Check the appointment time and preparation message in advance. If you become ill, develop an injury or are unsure about maximal exercise, contact the centre before attending. This article cannot assess your individual suitability. Do not stop or change prescribed medication to make the test “cleaner”; medication decisions require appropriate individual advice.
What can I eat and drink on the day?
HBOT Global’s instruction is no food in the four hours before the test and no caffeine. Remember caffeine in energy drinks and supplements as well as coffee. Follow the specific information supplied before the appointment, and ask if anything is unclear. If you cannot follow the instructions, tell the team so it can be considered when interpreting results.
Preparation rules differ between laboratories. The four-hour fast is this centre’s instruction, not a claim that every other protocol is wrong or that a test otherwise always becomes inaccurate. If you have diabetes, particular dietary needs or medication that must be taken with food, arrange an individual plan before fasting rather than making your own changes.
Arrive normally hydrated and consider bringing water for afterwards. Avoid compensating with unusually large quantities immediately beforehand. What is permitted during the fasting period should follow your appointment instructions; ask rather than guessing. For a future retest, keep food, caffeine and timing as comparable as practical so changes in conditions do not obscure the comparison.
What should I bring?
Bring exercise clothing that allows comfortable cycling and movement, plus suitable shoes. Choose clothes that do not restrict breathing or mobility. A water bottle and towel can be useful afterwards. You do not need to buy specialist equipment to take the test; contact the centre if you have particular preferences about using personal measurement equipment.
Allow time to arrive without rushing and ask questions before setup. A cycling test is not a competition, and you do not need to prove you can endure more than someone else. The aim is a useful measurement in controlled conditions. Information about your training and limitations helps put the results into context rather than treating the score in isolation.
How does the cycling test work step by step?
First, preparation and relevant circumstances are reviewed and the equipment is set up. The mask needs a good seal so breathing gases can be measured. You then cycle while workload gradually increases. The team explains the procedure, and you can speak up if the mask feels wrong or you experience discomfort during the test.
Performance Test is a 60-minute active cycling appointment. That does not mean an hour of maximal pedalling. Setup and other stages are part of the appointment; the strenuous active portion takes up only part of the time. Exact workload and duration depend on the protocol and participant, so there is no promised minute-by-minute schedule for everyone.
If you also want a separate resting measurement, check the contents of Metabolic Baseline or Longevity Assessment. The standard active Performance Test should not be confused with the combined resting and active package. These products answer different questions and have different overall durations; choose based on the information you actually need.
How hard is it, and can I stop?
The final stages become demanding, but you can ask to stop. Report pain, dizziness or other unusual discomfort immediately. Do not ignore symptoms to achieve a higher number. Conditions, current symptoms and injuries should be discussed before the test, rather than first becoming part of the conversation when the workload is already high.
If you stop before maximal-uptake criteria are met, the highest observed value may be described as VO2 peak. That does not automatically make the measurement useless. The report should explain what the test actually showed, and whether effort or measurement limitations affect how the result can be compared with reference values or previous tests.
When do I receive results and a review?
Results are added to your profile within a few days. Performance Test includes a 30-minute review to put results and training zones into perspective. “Within a few days” describes the expected process, not a guaranteed delivery time. Scores and estimated biological age are fitness indicators, not a medical age or a diagnosis of health or disease.
How should I use the numbers afterwards?
Treat zones as a practical starting point for training, not rigid boundaries in every situation. Heart rate and perceived effort respond to heat, sleep and day-to-day variation. Retesting after three to six months may be useful following a consistent training block. Using the same cycling method and similar preparation makes the comparison more meaningful.
Frequently asked questions
Can I test with an injury?
It depends on the injury and whether you can cycle safely. Contact the centre before booking and seek medical guidance if unsure; there is no general yes.
Can I train later on the same day?
Do not automatically plan another hard session after a demanding test. Adapt the rest of the day to the workload and how you feel, and ask during the review.
What if I have a cold?
Contact the centre and postpone if you are ill or have relevant symptoms. Testing while ill may not be comparable with a test completed when well.
Can I test if I am over 60?
Age alone does not determine suitability. Health, symptoms and exercise capacity need consideration, and results should use relevant age-specific comparisons.
How do cycling and treadmill tests differ?
They load the body differently and can produce different values. HBOT Global tests on a bicycle; compare with cycling references and use the same method for retesting.
